There is a simple binary test. Either a car pollutes, or it does not. If it is tested and does not, why should it be off the streets?A car could have been used rarely, have done barely 15K km, be in pristine condition &amp; still be pushed off the streets of Delhi. I think the next logical measure should be not selling food to anyone over 75!

The Government collects an insane amount of tax through GST and Road Tax, including GST on insurance. All of this is based on the assumption that a vehicle can be used for 15 years, with renewal allowed every 5 years thereafter. But when @nitin\_gadkari unilaterally decides to ban diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi, will he return one-third of the taxes collected? Many people have taken car loans to purchase these vehicles, and the interest paid over time is often equivalent to the GST itself. All of this will go in vain. It is a massive loss of value and wealth destruction.If the Government truly wants to curb pollution, it should conduct proper pollution checks and prove that a vehicle is indeed polluting. Most cars, even after 15 years, remain well within the prescribed emission norms. We are challenging the Government should carry out sampling of vehicles across different age groups, test their actual emissions, and publish the data to justify whether such a ban is necessary. What Gadkari and Modi are doing in Delhi is nothing but tremendous abuse of power. We urge people to protest this injustice. It is not just limited to Delhi, they'll push this policy in other states too.

Honestly, the government should instead enforce countrywide mandate for fitness checks of vehicles and make sure it's followed properly without any bribery and foul-play like in Japan (Which is highly unlikely because it's INDIA!!) and probably the government knows this, but they instead choose to simply ban the vehicles.

Don't buy cars then, use the metro. Plenty of cities around the world have anti-car policies. Because cars simply are horrible for any urban area.

Paris has blocked off half of its roads to cars. Tokyo levys huge tolls on every major road. NYC has congestion pricing. Singapore has a national limit on the number of cars that can exist. London has ULEV zones. The list goes on.

If you want to know why they have such policies, ask chatgpt.

It seems a bit harsh to stop servicing 15 year old vehicles, but something needs to be implemented to curb traffic and pollution. I'd be glad if we could have congestion pricing like NYC, and limit car-access (Paris) instead of this 15 year rule.

Is the whole RTO staff  going to be employed at checking RC of every vehicle coming to every petrol pumps for refueling ??

This might piss some people off but, this is a push to EV rather than a push to new cars.

Not just that, Delhi should expand its bus infrastructure and completely make it EV based and should improve the entire city infrastructure which is friendly for walking and cycling, which means lots of trees and gardens and lot of focus on aesthetics of the city.

Delhi does have very good metro system, which is only widening. Make the roads narrower for cars and wider for other modes of transport. Dedicated bus lines at the expense of car lines, cleaner and frequent buses and metro, dedicated lines for emergency services wherever possible and overall designing the public infrastructure to accommodate people and public transportation systems instead of cars. Maybe it can become a model city, the same way it became the model city for other metro construction.

Cars are supposed to improve convenience on occasion and be a fallback plan for self-reliance if the public systems fail, but it has become a nuisance in all the Indian cities because there has been no plan so far as to how the city should develop. Cars are not supposed to be mainline transportation in cities and the infrastructure should never be designed to accommodate cars specifically, at least within cities.

More investment to make the public infrastructure public friendly than facilitating the cars which only take the city into a downward spiral. This will free up a lot of space for people who actually need cars, make the city better for the people and probably make Indian Uncles have the ability to walk half a kilometer without getting a heart attack, walking on morning on routine is very different from having the ability to walk on demand. I know many people who can walk in the morning for a kilometer or two and if asked to climb two flights of stairs, they will come up looking like they summited a small mountain, all because they never do it on day-to-day basis because they can't be bothered to get out the car and walk 100 meters.

And, if the car owning lot's argument is that cities should be designed for cars because they like driving them? Just look at the population of city that owns cars and then consider we are a democracy, you will see who is going to win that argument any time of the day. City is for people and not cars.

When I used to say that the government will take your rights one by one slowly, all of you were against me. 

Last time this discussion occurred of banning diesel vehicles all the ev warriors jumped the wagon and went googoo gaga, one day the government will increase the prices of EV so much that you could only think about affording a car! 

Couple years from now, they will ban every ICE vehicle in delhi, then mumbai and bengaluru in the name of environment and blah blah, but the environment and air quality will still not change.

Can’t we sue the government when they failed to control pollution even after forcing people to sell their cars when they were in perfect shape and could be used for another 5-10 years, restricting entries of diesel and old petrol cars? All they care about is banning cars and forcing people to buy new ones and their public transports are either in miserable conditions or packed with sweaty people lol.

The primary pollutant (PM2.5 particulates) is coming from unregulated construction sites and the govt is busy banning cars and promoting EVs. EVs are powered by electricity produced from burning fossil fuels so either way pollution is increasing.

Later they are forcing ethanol blending, ethanol is produced from sugarcane and it requires LOTS of water to produce sugarcane and then make ethanol outta it. And Ethanol blended fuel gives worse mileage compared to 91 Octane fuel, so again more fuel is burned to cover certain distance.
